Welcome to the Wrexham Care Association
An organisation set up in the early 1970's to offer support to elderly people is inviting more volunteers and clients to come forward so its work can continue to florish.
The History and Work of WCA
In 1974 the miners were on strike and Wrexham Social Services and the local churches were anxious that because of the shortage of coal old people were at risk of dying of hypothermia so a Committee was formed to deal with this. A questionnaire was put through letter boxes by volunteers. If an elderly person living in the home wished to fill it in because they had problems the same volunteer would call for it. The response was immense. The Committee had one problem however; there was no one to visit the elderly person to deal with the problems. At this point Mr. & Mrs. Parry came to live in Wrexham and as Mr. Parry had been trained by a voluntary organisation in Liverpool to do case work he was interested in doing voluntary work in Wrexham. He visited all those who had filled in the questionnaire and dealt with their problems. Eventually a new Committee was formed and in time it was decided to apply to be a Registered Charity. This was granted 1st July 1980. Reg No 508422

Mr William Parry
On the death of Mr. Parry in 2003, Mrs. Parry took on the work her husband had been doing. Most referrals come from Social Workers. We have a befriending service. A volunteer visits a lonely elderly person on a weekly basis thus giving the elderly person something to look forward to. From time to time on suitable days the elderly person is taken for a short run to get away from the four walls. Ones who use wheelchairs are pushed e.g. around a garden centre to add some colour to an otherwise drab life. Secondly Social Workers refer people of any age who are on low income to Mrs. Parry who applies to appropriate Charities on their behalf. As a result elderly people can get life pensions and others receive one-off grants to pay e.g. for a much needed holiday, to replace kitchen electrical equipment which is beyond repair, etc. As a result a number of people are successfully helped each year. Sometimes other problems occur and Mrs. Parry endeavours to deal with them.
